Welcome all new iris addicts <g>
No matter how technical and boring some of the discussions get, just
remember we were all first time iris growers at one time or another and
some of us have really black thumbs - I kill things from too much
attention and not enough, and like our weather, alternate between the
two <g>.
Also, no matter how smart or educated we are, we are all still learning
and capable of making fools of ourselves here. When I first started
growing a garden, I learned an incredible amount of good, practical,
useful information from the mentally retarded woman who lived next
door. She got a huge amount of entertainment from watching me make
stupid mistakes in the garden (like when I planted my onion sets like
tulip bulbs, 6 inches under, and never saw them again). She was a hard
worker and had been gardening for half a century with her family. She
couldn't explain why she did things the way she did, but she could
always show me what needed to be done. Her main advice, which I think
also applies to irises - 'you need to work your dirt'. And 'don't be
out there paddling around on the ground when it's too wet'. Keep it
loose. Thank you Beatrice.
