I would add to Linda's sound advice that it also helps to read books and ask
questions. Any good general gardening manual will give you the basics of
garden practices (like don't plant your marigolds before the last frost is
safely past), and experienced locals will be glad to answer questions. But
ask first, before you act. I'm always dismayed when someone comes to me
with a question having already done something lethal to their plants, asking
"was I right?" And before you ask, be sure you have exhausted your own
resources, like that good general gardening manual you bought.
