Actually, all the beardless irises also grow from rhizomes, though they are
not as bulky as those of the bearded varieties. From a cultural, if not an
anatomical aspect, your point is well taken, however, as the roots of the
beardless irises must be treated with a lot more respect and care when you
are digging, dividing, and replanting them than is the case with bearded
irises.
