Re: Rank Beginner with Irises !!!

Welcome to Iris-Talk Everett!!

I don't usually respond to a newcomer's queries - there are many out
there who are SO much more experienced than I. . .but this time I figured,
what the heck!
My first thought was that a 4 X 6 x18 inch raised bed is wonderful but
when the dreaded disease, "the iris bug" bites you, that bed is just not
gonna cut it!
My second thought was to commend you for buying your rhizomes from a
local iris society! Not only does it mean you are getting good iris at a most
reasonable price, you have aligned yourself with folks that can help you but
the most important thing is that you purchased rhizomes FROM YOUR AREA thus
giving you a much better success rate.
And again, you are to be commended for following the planting
instructions given to you!!! Hurray for you!
The new little sprouts of growth are normal and a good sign that your
iris are settling in and rooting in their new beds. Remember. . .in our area,
(I'm in El Paso), we have to supply water during this time and even in the
winter. I can't tell you how much or when. . this is a thing you just have to
"get a feel for." My best suggestion is to learn what a healthy plant looks
like. . .when you learn this, you will definitely know what a sickly, unhappy
plant looks like!
As far as the sun factor. . not a problem as I see it. Right now the
plants need to establish good roots - the lesser amount of sun is OK in this
area. With our extremely hot summers, iris actually do better with some
protection from the hot west sun in the summer - something to remember come
next July, August and September.
Having grown Iris in Arkansas with great success (and rarely watering
them), I now have to remember that in the SW, iris need to be watered!!
You will get lots of suggestions from extremely knowledgeable folks
here on Iris-Talk. . listen to everyone, read everything. . .and learn lots!
Welcome to the addictive world of THE IRIS!!
