Sounds A-OK to me.  Raised beds are perfect for irises -- and most 
other flowering plants, because it provides good drainage.  Never 
grew anything that didn't require good drainage.  But what soil mix 
did you put in the beds?  Mix of composted matter with the topsoil is 
pretty much a must.  And some lime for irises if the soil mix leans 
to the acid.
