Here is the description from "The Iris of China" of the parts of I. rossii
that might be observed at this time of year:

"Stem base with yellowish brown persistent sheaths and fibers of old
leaves. Rhizome relatively thick, not filiform, creeping, tough, with many
nodes, reddish maroon; roots hairy, thin, long, and tough, reddish maroon.
Leaves strap shaped or narrowly linear, 4 to 10 cm long, 2 to 5 mm wide,
apex long acumunate, with two to four thin ribs."
