Hello Everyone, I'm afraid I've just been a lurker this past year or
two and often am months behind reading the digests, but I caught this
topic and feel I must relate an iris/cow story. The day after cutting
my irises down in the 400 ft rows we have for local sale in June, my
elderly neighbor came banging on our door at 7 am shouting, "The
Fisher's cows are in the irises!". We flew out the door once we were
clad, by which time this neighbor, wearing a dressing gown and old
fashioned, lace fringed cap, was standing across from the entire 40
cow herd, stick in hand, shouting, "Shoo, shoo" at them as they
munched side by side along the roadside row. I don't think the whole
thing would have struck me so funny if it had been June, but I was in
stitches. (Of course, no camera.) Another neighbor joined us in
trying to discourage the feasting at the smorgasbord when a knight in
shining armor on his noble steed, i.e. the Amish owner of the herd,
bareback on a workhorse, came charging down the road, and the herd,
oblivious to our shoos and shouts, took off at a run. No harm done to
the irises but I wish they'd arrived two days sooner and saved us the
work of cutting them down.
Cheryl Schaefer, with 21 clumps of rebloomers ready to bloom and
another 30 or so in bloom, NOT cut down by the frost 10/8, I suppose
because it was 70 or better for days afterward. Made it well into
November last year. They are so lovely against the backdrop of autumn
leaves.
