I was a vendor at the Farmer's Market in Fayetteville, AR for 11 years
(before I switched horses and moved to El Paso, TX - please don't question my
sanity)! Several of my fellow vendors had large iris beds and each spring,
when the iris were in full bloom, they would dig and sell individual iris,
wrapping the root-clump in a plastic bag. I was truly surprised, having NEVER
dug mine at this time and positive that these folks just didn't know what
they were doing - but indeed they did. First, they thinned out their beds and
got people interested in Iris - people who might never have bought a rhizome
. . .I learned that customers would very willingly pay me $5-$8 for an iris
in bloom, roots wrapped in a bag in May before they would buy that same iris
rhizome (with picture attached) for $2 in August. And you never have to deal
with "that iris doesn't look ANYTHING like the picture". . . . .
As Cheryl said, the irises recover just fine. While I no longer have the
need to do this, it can be done sucessfully! And there's always circumstances
when you might want to share an iris with a friend in bloom time!!
