Re: CULT: shade tolerance

Bill, I have a colony of Louisiana irises that are almost in full shade
now (the trees grew) out in a wet field that also has standing water
most of the winter, but usually is baked dry in summer. An example of
one, but this particular cultivar thrives there - I kept meaning to take
a photo of it in full bloom, but kept missing the window of opportunity
of enough sun to get a decent photo. It gets about half an hour of
early morning, direct sun & blooms heavily & more reliably than the more
recent clumps nearby in full sun. Somewhere I read that some species of
Louisianas do better in shade than others, actually prefer it in their
native habitat farther south - maybe someone from the LA-iris bunch
could advise you about selections that might like the extra shade. The
one I have is a very tall, deep purple-black self, with little or no
signal. Bluer than BLACK GAMECOCK and much taller. A gift years ago
whose name I didn't keep track of.
