Having read Sharon's posting (with which I heartily agree in regard to
almost any iris species), perhaps I feel even more strongly about 'Late
Amythest' that it is not all hoogiana. I should mention that the plant I
had was from the AIS plant sale. When it bloomed, the flowers were almost
50% larger than hoogiana, looked TB in form, and had a small dark purple
signal under the beard.
PLEASE do not pass along rhizomes or seeds of any iris species unless and
until you are SURE of its identity, having bloomed it and compared your
plant to the species description. The BIS species book is an excellent
source of authoritative, if brief, species descriptions.
Do we have anyone from Denver on the list? Panayoti Keliadis (sorry if that
famous name is not spelled correctly) was growing a number of verified onco
species at the Denver Botanical Garden and wrote about them several years
ago in SIGNA. Perhaps that collection is still extant.
