Depends on your outlook. If you make a cross next spring (2002) and plant
the seeds in the fall of 2002, they should (mostly) germinate in spring
2003. The majority, with good culture, will bloom in 2004. Of course, in
the meantime, you have kept on making crosses and planting seeds, so after
2004 you have new seedlings blooming every year!
Breeders of many other plant genera have to wait much longer. Lloyd
Austin, a famous iris hybridizer, worked for a long while in pine
hybridization. Think of that generation time!
