erwinia carotovora - pathogen soft rot disease. gram neg. rod. Secretes
enzyme that causes cells to separate from each other.
Everyday I went out to my garden and everyday no matter what I tried they
deteriorated more and more. Some of which I lost entirely. Out of shear
desperation, I decided to try something radical - "Magic". I left the plants
intact to diminish stress, I didn't dig them up. Then proceeded to wipe away
the bacteria using pieces of paper towel while wearing disposable gloves. I
took a capful of full strength Clorox and poured it over the deteriorating
infected area (some of it overflowed onto the surrounding soil). I placed
powered Gypsum - calcium sulfate into the cavity and lightly packed it in.
The following day, I noticed some of the surrounding soil appeared lighter in
various areas. It occurred to me that perhaps the soil was contaminated as
well. The soil was removed to a depth of about 1-2 inches and replaced with
new soil to which I added some gypsum and sterile sand. I also noted the
rhizome was not deteriorating at the same rate as previously; it appeared to
almost have stopped. Gently, I removed the moistened gypsum and remaining
bacteria with pieces of paper towel and once again filled the cavity with new
gypsum powder. No bleach was used this time. In advance, I dissolved 1 -
crushed 325 mg. aspirin into 1 quart of previously boiled and cooled water.
This liquid mixture was poured into the surrounding newly replaced soil
around the plant. The third day, showed no further progression of this
disease. I have repeated this 2 day magical procedure on 8 additional
rhizomes. Fourteen days have passed with no further visable signs of rot and
increases are flourishing to date.
