Because salt will kill the soil as well as the plants growing in it?

A salty family story passed down--

A year or two before the depression, a local man (AR) got mad because a farm
he wanted was rented to my grandfather. It was choice land because it
sported a nice apple orchard. This disgruntled man slipped into the orchard
and burried salt at the base of each tree. As the winter's snow melted away,
it became obvious that the orchard had befallen fowl play. Of course, being
the kind of person he was, the man couldn't resist bragging about his bad
deed!
