My two cents addressing the questions you contemplate imbeded:
<What format? >
Microsoft Excel. Databases could import the data from a downloaded file. It
could be used in the Excel format "as is". Second choice would be a text file
from which I could manually copy and paste into a spread sheet or data base.
<Should all the Checklists be combined into one download?>
No. Decade increments similar to the checklists would be fine for me. Access
to annual data as it is compiled ideal. Annual increments would be
acceptable. File size may become an issue when combining all checklist at
some point. One would think that where we are going sometime in the future is
a checklist with a photo option sometime in the future, Right?
<Another - we are still finding errors in the electronic versions, so any
download would be a snapshot before other corrections.>
When I transcribe from the online list, I have errors even when online data
is correct. Perfection is an objective not a criterion here.
<Is it wise to have so many different versions?>
Yes. The printed version is the "Bible" and should continue to be. The online
version will be the "Living Bible" and the one people read. Maybe 5% of iris
growers have access to the printed version check lists while 46% of the US
population have access to the Internet.
<What kind of changes should we allow?>
Only those allowed in the printed version should be allowed to the original
download file, at least initially. Individuals could
alter/amplify/correct/expand/append/annotate as they saw fit once downloaded.
<How do we unify names such as Schreiner and Schreiners?>
For my purposes it makes no difference. Choose either or both.
<Some of these other issues will have to wait.>
Patience grasshoppers and grasshopper worriers.
<Everyone will need to realize that the printed checklists are still the
official record.>
OK
<The '99 Checklist will not be available for download until the AIS has
recovered the cost of printing the hardcover version. Until then, access
to the online '99 (when I get it finished) will be by subscription.>
Curious: Subscription? Fee? Until recovery of how much? What is the current
status of recovery? If a fee, where does it go?
Wonderin' if I should be lookin' for some OCR software while runnin' hard at
the wall to avoid typin' ? Hummm.......... maybe a really cute secretary. <g>
