I know how you feel. I have really worked to provide the best bed prep. etc. for them.
Two weeks ago I was so pleased with my irises' condition. New ones settling in and
no rot anywhere. We left for 10 days, and got home to find "Midnight Thunder" just a
light weight, dry shell. There was no odor, and all iris around it are fine so far. They were watered twice a week since there was no rain. What a bummer, since that was my first choice for a new iris!
Having said this, I'm now enjoying "Fond Remembrance's" first fall bloom for me.

Well, darn it all, one of the larger increases on SEAKIST just
spontaneously (no recent obvious stress) rotted. I had hopes this was
going to turn out to be another supertough one. Don't get me wrong, it
still seems to be doing ok here, but is no longer in the 'best' class
for me.
There is a bit of 'fragrance' among the irises now that has not been
this common for quite a while. I don't doctor for rot, but do try to
walk around and see who's succumbing. Other than a few new ones (new
here that is) that aren't going to make it here, it looks like it's
mostly in a few of my own older seedlings this time around. Mostly just
outer leaves. Oh well, I guess I couldn't be Rot Queen if my own
hybridizing efforts weren't just as bad as everybody else's. ;-(
Lots of lush growth after all the rain, at a time of year when it's
usually quite dry. I don't like seeing this going into cold weather!
