Re: AIS: checklist CDs - ideas

I like the concept of AIS selling interim, 'raw data' CDs every year,
with whatever has been added to that point included, errors and all,
maybe with separate files for each printed decade (worry about
overlap/corrections on the online version). Pick a date (maybe the day
the annual R&I is published) as the 'cutoff' date for revisions for the
version of the CD for that year. Maybe some years, there would be few
changes, some years a lot.

I probably wouldn't use it in any kind of database, would probably
prefer an online subscription to something with sophisticated search
engine and oopah to run complex searches thru the whole database &
download results..

I would probably use the 'home version' CD with a word processor and run
one by one searches for whatever I wanted to look at, or line/paragraph
field sort for this n that.. All the intros from Tompkins, sorted by
year of intro....All the intros with WHOLE CLOTH in the pedigree, sorted
by hybridizer & year of intro (then I would look up where the hybridizer
lived/selected seedlings)

One thing that seems odd to me - if the thinking is that the majority of
AIS members who purchase checklists and R&I's want paper copies, why in
the world hold up selling electronic copies to the few who want them?
If AIS wants to make sure that everybody who buys an electronic copy,
also buys a hardcopy, make proof of purchase part of the sale.

Another thought - try to talk one of the big commercial nurseries into
stamping (burning? cutting? so illiterate I don't know the right term) &
mailing the CDs as a service to AIS. Let them claim it as a charitable
deduction. Even if every single one of the subscribers to iris-talk
wanted one, that's less than a thousand copies, & I suspect it would be
a LOT less than a thousand, especially for preliminary versions.

Charge extra if it includes the current R&I.
