Re: ot:bio:Linda Bartell

Welcome Linda!
Where y'all from, and what zone? It helps when discussing cultivars and culture, as climate requirements are different. I have alkaline clay in 9b southern Calif.

Hello everyone!
I've been growing iris for ten years, but didn't
really catch the iris-virus until '97, when I joined
AIS. My primary interest is TB's (I have about 200),
and am just getting into SDB's. I also have a few
SIBS and only this past June actually saw JI's 'in the
flesh' when our local iris club visited Ensata Gardens
(I'm in Michigan, just north of Detroit).

I don't hybridize - just grow what others have
hybridized (and buy too many after perusing catalogs
in the spring)and read anything I can get my hands on
regarding irises. My soil is clay and a real bear to
amend (which I do by hand - don't have a rototiller),
the main reason I don't hybridize.

I'm also a member of TBIS - and I guess that's about
all I need for an intro. But I do have a question.
Maybe I never noticed - or if I did, I've forgotten! -
but my irises are suddenly growing like weeds.
Increase buds and new little fans are popping up on
every cultivar (and I have seven irises reblooming,
too). I think the fall is growth season for roots and
increase buds (?), but this is spectacular! And it
can't be my fall fertilizer, because it contains no
nitrogen. I'm thinking that after the drought-like
conditions this past summer, the recent rain and
cooler temps. have pushed the 'fast forward' button on
my plants. Any opinions?

Thanks...and glad to be here;)

Linda B.
P.S. If I've failed to mention anything that might be
pertinent to the list regarding my bio info, let me
know.
