Re: Digest Number 2215- fertilizing

John: I live just north of Detroit, Zone 6a.
Regarding fertilizing, here's my two cents: When I
first grew irises (before I contracted the
iris-virus), I don't remember fertilizing them. They
always blossomed for me, then slowly began
disappearing. This was, I know now, because I didn't
know enough to amend the heavy claly soil and I no
doubt lost some to rot. And then those that hung on,
needed dividing, so they didn't bloom.
Now I fertilize with granulated fertilizer (made my
own up until this past spring...think it was 6-10-10
as suggested in The World of Irises). This fall I've
fertilized with Cooley's Fall Blend. I'll do the same
with their Spring blend come April. It's really kind
of confusing - one grower says iris are 'heavy
feeders' and another on the other side of the country
says iris don't need too much in the way of
fertilizing. What's a person to do??? But I believe
the soil gets depleted after a few years, so
fertilizer can only help. Our local iris club is
having a speaker on Oct. 24...the subject is how to
feed your SOIL when you grow mostly one kind of
perennial.
