I swear that I am not and never have been a hybirdizer of iris nor any other
plant, but I do know a little bit about biology and genetics.
Utilizing only current idealized cultivars would perpetuate the strength and
weakness of the subjective definition of beauty and robustness. Fashions
change, and after the nuclear war, survival characters will surely vary. So
it is best to go back to the well or the original gene pool -- if there is
any left -- and bring that into current cultivars. The subjectively valued
outcomes of current hybridization may pale in comparison to a different set
of contingent realities. Under no circumstances should we diminish the
breadth of the gene pool.
