Very good question, Kelly. (see below, please)
The only things I have noticed in my searches are that certain iris, like Purissima(Mohr-Mitchell 1927), was used as a pod parent, seemingly exclusively (haven't seen any crosses using Purissima as pollen parent). Or that Great Lakes (cousins 1938) was used as a pollen parent.
This tells me how I could consider the use of those two in a potential breeding program. What I, as a beginner, could not determine is if these iris were used (Purissima as pod parent) or (Great Lakes as pollen parent) as such because they were infertile as pollen or pod parents or if the hybridizers had traits in mind they knew would be passed from using the iris mentioned above in the crosses they made.
Maybe someone who knows can shed some further insight of traits passed on from pod and pollen parents. Differences from one iris, if any, if it is used as a pod or pollen parent.(or did i miss something posted previously? ;))

The World of Iris or similar reference?
I know from work with the genus Lathyrus that certain traits have
actually been planned out allowing you to cross two things together and
already have a definite answer (or close to one) on what you are going
to get.
I think a reference like this would be most helpful to the beginning
hybridizer.
Thanks!

So, my question would be, do you use the newer iris as the pod or pollen
parent? I was to understand the vigor usually goes with the pod parent.
Anyone have experiences they'd share?
