CULT: TB Seed germination in cold climates...

Since you've all been so helpful so far maybe I can get some advice
here.
I have read a lot on the planting and germination of TB and iris
seeds in general and have the "idea" of "how to" plant them.
Has anyone in colder climates (zone 4 or 3 or colder) had much luck
with TB seeds? I understand that cold and moist conditions are
essential for germination. What I am not 100% sure about is how cold
is too cold? Before I experiment with planting my eventual hybrid
cross seeds outdoors I was curious how much cold the seeds can
withstand. When it freezes here (usually by now, but not the past two
years *fingers crossed for a warming trend*) the temps remain in the
teens to 20's for lows for a bit, then by December (if not sooner)
drop lower to below zero. (a warm week (40's to 60's) or two in
December or January doesn't help things much). I guess my question is
how many weeks of 'extreme' cold can they handle? Won't the seeds
freeze and be ruined if I plant them outdoors here? Or is that
something I need to find out on my own for this area? Any tips, such
as covering with something to protect the seed beds, etc?
Thanks, again, for your time and patience with me,
