Re: CULT: Purple ringed rhizomes

Hi Laurie,

I'm noticing the purple rings as I clean up my iris beds for the winter. When I strip off the old dead leaves, the coloration really shows up on the shiny white rhizome tissue that's been covered up all summer while the leaves were growing and green. I'll send you a list when the rain stops.

Subject: [iris-talk] CULT: Purple ringed rhizomes

  Hi All,

I posted something about this a while back and received a private reply
from Roger at Superstition. In unpacking my orders and gifts this year, I
noticed a few rhizomes with rings of purple coloration encircling the
tops of the rhizomes - not PBF, as the color didn't extend up the leaves
at all - just purple-ringed rhizomes (PRR for abbreviation's sake -
thanks, Janet). Roger suggested this phenomenon most often occurs in
SDBs, though it can occur in other classes as well.

It has been suggested to me that it might be useful to add a PRR list to
my website iris pages along with my current PBF list as one more element
of cultivar identification. So ... if any of you know of any irises you
are growing that exhibit PRR, please let me know. I realize this is not
something you will be able to observe in the garden. It'll only be
evident on dug and washed rhizomes (obviously NOT the best time of year
to be making this request). Anyhow, keep it in mind for future reference,
  please.

  Thanks!

  Laurie
