Al,  

Would it be a shot in the arm to add the fertilizer or more like a kick in the shins?  I'd think fertilizing a struggling, unhealthy rhizome might stress it even more.  Or is that not the case with iris?

  1 TBS antibacterial hand soap or dish soap with Triclosan, 1 TBS 
  water soluble fertilizer in 2 gallons of water. 

  I have not added fertilizer to the mix, but it would be a shot in the 
  arm to a sick plant. Some people use straight soap squirted on or 
  about the rhizome.
