I was just composing a list of these just before I read my digest to
see your posts. I have refered to this as a purple rhizome and used
the shortform PR. It isn't a ring but a solid colour of the rhizome.
It occurs mostly with SDB amd MDB but some IBs and one TB that I have
noted is Jump Start, which is also PBF. It can be seen most clearly
when the older foliage is stripped from the rhizome. It is dilluted by
age and sunlight and can only be seen clearly when it is cleaned. It
is different then the PBF allthough there are a few SDbs that have a
continuous colouration such as my own Limesicle that is intensly
purple on the rhizome and this continues to intense Purble Based
Foliage with no interuption of colour. There are some plants with
both PR and PBF that have a clear uncoloured space between the PR amd
PBF such as Splash of Red, Down And Dirty and the TB Jump Start.
PBF is made more intense with Sunlight whereas PR is made less intense
by exposure to sun. All fascinating stuff.
I have use PR as well as PBF to help sort out plants that get mixed up
with each other. PR is quite common in SDBs, guessing arout 25% or
better, wheras PBF is around 6-7%.
I have some good photos of all these and will prep a few for posting
on Iris Photo.
