I was disturbed to see Amy Ginley's request for sources of antibiotics
for use on irises. I think that we should put the growing of irises in
perspective. For most people it is a hobby, even if an all consuming
one at times. In this context, if a few plants die, it is not the end
of the world and may indicate that those plants are not really suitable
for the local climate.
We have both uncontrolled antibiotic use in agriculture and pressure by
individuals to force doctors to perscribe antibiotics when they will not
contribute to a cure. The result is a world flooded with antibiotics
and the evolution of a large number of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
The increase in incidence of flesh eating disease and samonella-like
deaths in nursing homes, outbreaks of food poisoning, etc. is the other
side of the story.
I suggest that we do not use antibiotics on irises but rather cut out
the bad areas and use a household powder such as Comet or Ajax. Both
will sterilize the rhizome and do the job. if it does not, just let the
plant die!
