The species listed in John Ingram's message should all do well in Zone 5 except possibly Iris wattii. This latter is a warm climate species that has not survived for me here in our Zone 4B [recent range 3-5 or 6 depending on the year!].
Much to my surprise Iris milesii is growing well outside but has not yet flowered. I have now moved half of the plants inside for the winter in order to stimulate flowering. I treat the Dietes the same way and they did flower inside in the autumn the first winter and then flowered outside the last two summers. May be milesii will do the same thing once it get the idea of how to flower.
Iris wattii could be handled the same way or the additional Zone warmer might make the difference. It would be interesting to know where these two species flower outdoors in North America.
As for Southern California, it will depend on two things, the watering conditions and how much winter cold the species require for flowering.
