Re: TB: REB: saving from freezes

What I always try to do with a few if the forecast is for the onset of
prolonged serious cold weather or if I have one I really want to see
bloom is dig part of the clump, pot it, and bring it indoors (thanks to
Lloyd Z for suggesting this). I've done this in previous years with huge
clumps of HARVEST OF MEMORIES and will probably do it again this year
with a few, but NOT whole clumps - too big!! I plan to do this with a
few that haven't produced useable pollen here in the spring to see what
their fall anthers look like.

Just dig the whole plant, dirt and all.

On the other hand, this is sometimes fussy IMMORTALITY we're talking
about and I'd be afraid to mess with her roots this time of year. I've
had really good success building frames out of metal stakes (3/8 inch
rebar 4 ft long) with connecting 'rafters' of 1/2" flexible plastic
pipe, allowing at least several inches to a foot of air space around
the plant, then draping the whole 'cage' with one or more layers of
Reemay or other semipourous plant bed covers, carefully sealed at the
bottom to keep in the warmth. I've kept TB stalks 36" tall safe from
hard freezes this way, & once the frame is in place, the covers can be
removed if it warms up again (or if you want to actually see the flowers
<g>) & put back on for as long as you want to fight the season.
