Not sure where all the Cranes that nest in NWT go during winter, but I know
a lot of cranes winter here in central NM. So far I haven't seen any this
year, but it's been very warm this year, and they're probably just taking
their time moving south. Haven't noticed many Snow Geese yet either. They
are normally here in force by the end of October.
I think they gave up on the Whooping Crane project in NM. The few that
wintered here didn't fare too well (mostly Coyotes, but I've heard that
guns played a part too). I don't know if any are left in that group now.
I think the ones they tried to get established into this flyway were all
captive bred originally. They were beautiful to see!
