And what I mostly look for is pedigree with an eye towards what might do
well here and might mix well with what I already have.
So I might an ordinary sounding non-reblooming blue iris from Zurbrigg
background that isn't as good looking as a spectacular looking
reblooming blue from Suttons out of less successful background <for my
growing conditions>. Just did, for that matter - LAKE OF BAYS.
Other criteria for me are uniform height, taller than 30 inches. Again,
this is seems to vary with pedigree and/or bloom season - early ones are
usually stunted. This criterion is hard to figure out without visiting
gardens.
Form is important to me, but what I choose in form has more to do with
how I think it will mix with older forms - I like moderate width, and
above average substance, but not horizontal falls, or open standards.
But I've chosen some with overlapping falls to try to add some width to
older stuff.
Good branching seems to be really easy to come by in hybridizing, so
that's not very important to me in what I buy.
Distinctiveness is the absolute <last> criterion for my buying something
- so often the latest breaks are not good performers here.

Actually.................. Distinctiveness - - is more like 75% of my
decision of whether or not I will purchase it. Margie V. Oro Valley,
