Re: Re: HYB: Selecting (was Crump cultivars)

Interesting thread.

Why does one choose what to acquire and add? From a growers point of view I
still choose those that are appealing for one reason or another. In that,
distinctiveness ranks very high. Why buy something that is going to look
more or less the same as something I'm already growing? Then there are
those chosen trying to find one of a type that does well. That's been
pretty hard. Lots of whites and oranges have been tried in that search.
Most every type has been tried here more than a few times. The search goes
on.

From a pollen daubing point of view, the selections are different. I tend
to use arilbred pollen, so I look for combinations in TBs that I think might
work with them. I disregard plant strength on those. I figure I'll have
some with plant strength on hand anyway. I'll pick up something that
doesn't really appeal to me if I think it might be something that would
work. I'll also try something that I'm pretty sure is going to be a
difficult cultivar to manage in the hopes I can get it going enough to
utilize it. I figure I'm looking at multiple generations anyway, so if I
can manage to grow seedlings from what I get, then I can worry about
adjusting what I don't like about it down the line.
