Mike, you really need someone from your own area to tell you what would be
most appropriate there, but I can't imagine any reason why you should cut down
whatever growth you now have.  Here in the much colder upper midwest I
wouldn't do that, ever, and you don't have the winter freezing of the leaves
the way we do.  I would never fertilize in the fall, certainly not with any
fertilizer that has nitrogen because that encourages leaf growth, but I don't
believe you want to cut off what you have.  I mulch the new plants over winter
with a loose mulch, but in your area I would not expect even that to be
necessary.  Still, as I wrote at the start, somebody from your vicinity (and I
know there are folks like that who are members of this list, though they may
not read their e-mail every day, esp. at this time of year) would give better
information for your climate.  Enjoy those iris!!!!
