Re: CULT: Fall burning?

Pros:
Burning is fun, especially if you have a bit of pyromaniac in you.
Burning gets rid of the dead weeds and iris leaves.
Burning will destroy borer eggs if you are in borer country.

Cons:
Fire is dangerous, and in wilder areas can get out of control fast.
Fire actually enables sprouting of some seeds.
The smoke will irritate eyes, nose and throat.

We have burned large iris beds, 5'x125' that had moderate weed cover.
A lot of the weeds were grasses and burned very hot--hot enough to melt
EON marker plates. Hot spots develop and flare up, you must be vigilant.
You also need to be sure the local ordinances allow for burning. The
following
spring we had a lot of grasses sprouting that we had ot seen much of before,
and they were numerous and rampant...like they were dormant and just
waiting
for help in germinating.
