One of the reasons to do a winter or early spring burn is because it is
wetter and cooler so you would be less likely to injure living plant
tissue at that time.
Fall burn is easier because it is hotter, but also more likely to injure
living tissues, both weeds and iris.
Never have burned my iris plantings, but plan to experiment some this
winter. Not <in> the rows, because of plastic labels, but maybe clean
out dead foliage or mow, then burn down the row middles.
In Feb/early March, when the forestry folks come help me burn the little
prairie here, they don't like to burn unless wind speeds (including
gusts) are less than 10 mph. And I can't get a burn permit if it's been
dry and the winds are greater than that.
