Mike -- The stench you describe makes me suspect bacterial soft rot.
Where on the leaf is the odor concentrated -- at the base? Even if
there's no other apparent rot on the plant, I'd suggest dousing the base of
the plant and the ground around it with Comet cleanser. If this shows up on
other plants, I'd get a dust applicator and dust the entire bed with Comet.
This seems to have stopped a bad infection one of my beds experienced this
late summer and fall. -- Griff
