Maybe I should state for the record. 1812-2RE seems to be the best of the
cross in most ways. It has height, good branching, early rebloom, and 9 buds.
The bloom is large and has fairly good form (when I got past that first
bloom). I would change the color AND maybe add some of the ruffles and such that
I'm seeing on others. Several have enough good good qualities to cross.
I've yet to see what spring bloom will change in any or all of these. I'm
experienced enough to know that spring can bring MANY surprises. Sometimes a
fall blooming iris (first bloom) can look so different when it blooms in the
spring.
Even though I've not gotten any first generation plicatas, (and don't expect
too now) I'm really happy with what I'm seeing. I am learning a lot . . .
always a good thing. And I'm having fun!
Off line advise has been to NOT go with sibling crosses. I won't reveal
names but it is advise I value.
Since time and space are of concern to me . . . after all I'm getting older
not younger, and my time is too valuable to waste <bg> there is a practice I
sometimes indulge in . . . which would probably work here. If plants and
pollen permit, I sometimes make the cross, plant 25 and hold the rest. If I see
anything encouraging in that 25, then I can plant the remaining seed. I only do
this in marginal crosses and have never planted the remaining seed. Guess
that tells me something!
It will be a fun filled winter, trying to decide what to cross onto these
seedlings. I've so many rebloom seedlings and new rebloom acquisitions that the
choices will be interesting.
