<Now . . . my question. Is there any point in making sibling crosses. When I
did my study on irises, almost 20 years ago, several people recommended doing
sibling crosses. Theoretically, I could pick the four best, intercross and
extract the BEST from the 1812 cross.>
For the goal of red on yellow rebloom you have made a very good start with the rebloom goal achieved. All F1 are pl/pl/Pl/Pl . F2 will have aproximatly 1 out of 36 plicata. If you like those odds go for it. I know I would on the basis of even if you fail you would still have very nice rebloomers to select from. Such a nice way to fail.
Out crosses to any colour reblooming plicata would give you 1/4 plicata and some would be red on yellow but you may loose some rebloom as the factors causing rebloom may not line up. There is not one rebloom gene, I suspect several rebloom genes and also modifier genes that influence /control rebloom.
All said and done if this was my project I would go for the sibling crosses. Make as many different sibling crosses as you can from the seedlings you like the best. Almost guaranteed sucess. The rebloom genes and modifiers are all in place.
