Re: HYB: moisture


Hard to say, since the timing coincides with the two best bloom seasons
in 35 yrs.

I guess I made around 400 attempts (individual blooms) this past spring,
about 130 mature pods.   Around 600 attempts three years ago with about
60 pods.

Before that, I was making a <lot> of tries, but was having very little
success - 2001 only produced 6 pods!  Before I knew to quit trying when
it was above 80oF and had little or no good pollen to work with.  Seems
like I calculated a 1% success rate <g>  I wasn't paying any attention
to whether or not anthers had been open when dew was there, and didn't
know how to recognize "clumpy" pollen.  Not sure I can always tell even
now without testing it, and had so little pollen to work with, didn't
want to waste it by rolling it around on my fingers.
