Thanks Chuck & Neil - I think I understand all of that.
Mary Lou's photo of AMAIN X SWEET REFLECTION
<http://www.hort.net/lists//iris-photos/oct05/msg00254.html>
is a nice example of a blend to help me understand this. Thanks Mary
Lou.
AMAIN provides the yellow pattern of yellow towards the edges of the
falls underlying the violet from SWEET REFLECTION to give red towards
the edges and violet in the middle.
===Another question - would a cross of any old blue self from a long
line of blue selfs, but with only one (or two) dose(s) of yellow
inhibitor crossed with any old yellow self from a long line of yellow
selfs with only one (or two) dose(s) of blue inhibitor potentially
produce some smooth red (brown) selfs?
In other words, would the offspring all/mostly be selfs (ignoring all
the wild cards hidden for umpteen generations)? Yellows, blues, and
some form of so-called red?
Or are there so many 'wild cards', recessive patterns that blends are
just as likely as anything else from such a cross?
I'm not ready to tackle a punnett on this one to figure probabilities,
just trying to understand the possibilities...
And thinking about my first 'fantasy cross', of DUSKY CHALLENGER X
VANITY which was predicted to produce a bunch of muddy blends. I have
since produced a number of those muddy blends (tho not from that cross),
plus some that were muddy, but not blends. Muddy is a sort of brown,
but not an attractive shade...
