Jeff, I do take an interest in such matters, yes. (Pigments).
I have forgotten which anthocyanidin Frank Adams has, but I do remember
it is a substanital step away from, not toward, the Pelargonidin center
branch of the tree.
There is a Methylated radical repacing the Hydrogen at one or both F 3'
and 5' positions rather than the simpler Hydroxyl. The redder color may
be due to the attached glucose-protein string(s) rather than to the
elaboration at 3', 5' which is the key to true red anthocyanins (see my
upcoming article "A Third Approach to Red," in the BAIS, January '06
issue if all goes as Bruce Filardi plans.)
Hopefully, even though Frank Adams and its pigment(s) are not noted in
the article, the whole color range issue is presented with two of the
pigment branches (Pelargonidins and Delphinidins) explored in some
detail, with the enzyme responsible for the difference described and
noted.
I was sent Frank Adams from a northern source, but intended to get the
Superstition cultivar for comparison. I've had to cut back to the
barest basics here so my orders have been set aside, including that one.
The one who sent me the rhizome had some uncertainty about its identity,
my reason for hoping to compare it.
As the northern-source cultivar bloomed, Frank Adams fits both what you
describe and other descriptions I have seen. It is remarkably modern
for 1937, but so are some other variegatas or near-variegatas, such as
Shah Jehan. I am rather taken with what bloomed here, and it *is* a
survivor also.
Linda Mann's survives for her too. Neither of us have significant
increase, but I don't have significant increase on anything else either.
I'm not drawing any conclusions. Lack of cultivation and feeding take
their toll.
