Re: CULT: planting an iris garden

Deb sent me several questions offlist that I'm posting here so others
can chime in.

I'm not sure I can answer your questions, but without foliage and
especially without roots, there isn't likely to be any plant. Did you
find any pictures/diagrams of planting rhizomes? I don't have a link
handy and don't have time to hunt one for you right now - maybe someone
else can point you to a helpful website.

< There are roots with the foliage plants, no roots for what I divided.
How long should the rhizome be when I plant? Most are six to eight
inches right now. >

Maybe Jim or Neil can better answer you on these - it really depends on
location and soil type. Where in South Carolina are you? The only
thing I'd add is that it's important to loosen the soil a foot or more
deep if you can, unless it's really sandy or loose already. And make
sure there is good drainage.

<How long can I continue planting? I am preparing the soil with
limestone and then adding bone meal and weed control, is this the proper
way.
Thank you so much for any help. I am new to this and it is more
difficult of a project then I expected.>
