Linda.  I did a lot of thinking about this years ago.  Let's see if I can remember what my thoughts were.
Aphylla, if I remember right, is a northern species that is dormant all winter, then blooms just as it breaks dormancy.
Some of the other tetraploid iris are from southern Europe.  They go dormant in the heat and drought of summer, and are growing all the cool, wet, winter.  So they bloom just before going dormant.
So some segregants of the cross of aphylla nad the southern species might have genes for blooming on going dormant and genes for blooming on breaking dormancy.  Voila, two blooms per season.

The weakness of this theory, aside for old age, is that it might not be necessary.  I have since read that wild iris sometimes are found blooming out of season in the wild, in their native habitat.
I'm interested in comments on this.
