This is one of several occurances that make me hesitant to send anything to a
national or regional event. I have heard things from several hybridizers, and
could be convinced that they were isolated incidents, but this is the third thing
that I know of that has happened with Mike Greenfield. This indicates to me that
perhaps it is a widespread issue(?). I was present when Mike opened a box returned
from the National where the irises returned were wrapped tightly in a paper bag in
the box and were quite wet and on their way to slimy. I know these are strictly
volunteer events and that they are a service to hybridizers to display their
plants, but it would hardly be a National or Regional event without the guests.
Shouldn't there be some mechanism in place to prevent such things? I have also
heard chatter that it can be difficult to get hybridizers to send guests. Perhaps
this is part of the problem?
