I've never received a general report on how my convention irises grow.
Good grief!
Well, so much for the test garden paradigm!
Maybe some simple and brief standardized AIS forms might be drawn up which
would include a few observations on plant growth to be made at certain points
in the cycle of guestship, maybe three times a year, say, observations on
increase amd whatnot, condition of foliage, etc., winter survival, with
appropriate records to be included regarding times of fertilizing, spraying etc., and
comments on any unusual or extreme weather, or other occurances, and the
general aspect, soil, etc. of the garden. Notes on rebloom go without saying.
Frankly, I think this sort of communication falls into the category of common
courtesy.
Hybridizers could indicate whether they actuallly wanted such a form kept on
each of their plants in each garden, or not. Differences between
performance, and culture, would thus be documented. I really don't think this would be
too burdensome. Might even be interesting for the host, too.
Cordially,
