Linda -- I remember when my uncle Charlie used to keep his minnows in the horse tank on his farm north of Richmond, Indiana. There was always a tiny stream of water trickling into the tank, keeping the water fresh for the horses and fine for the minnows, too, until we'd seine them out and head for the creek. So, if your trough has holes in it, I guess what better use than to plant irises in it?! -- Griff

Good for you, Griff. I counted up about 300 seedlings that are still too small to get in the ground - they are in big pots, little pots, medium sized pots, plastic window boxes, and a big metal livestock watering trough with rusted out holes in the sides.
But at least there was enough room to finally get all the "big enough" (I hope) babies into the ground!
Just finished re-arranging the ~100 cultivars in the 'pot ghetto', weeding the mulch under them. Still trying to decide how many of the shelled/dried seeds from this year's crop to plant. About 30 crosses already in pots from fridge, another half dozen still chillin', about 50 crosses in envelopes... I <have> to plant the IMMORTALITY crosses, and the IMM offspring cousin/half sib crosses, and the HARVEST OF MEMORIES crosses, and the late blooming crosses, and all the award winner pollen donor crosses, and.... groan...
I guess there are still a few semi-sunny places in the yard that can be covered with pots.... <g>
64oF, sunny, breezy, mold from beautifully colored falling leaves.
The last of the year's transplants are in the ground, and am spending the afternoon making labels -- a drudge, but gotta do it. Not much greater frustration than losing track of a seedling's identity. -- Griff
