Big rhizome

I am curious.? I pulled a rhizome out of my flower bed that is 6-7 inches long.? It was growing into another iris clump.? The iris?was Bay Front (I think a 2006 Suttons).? That large of a size is unusual for southern New Mexico.? Do rhizomes grow that big in other portions of the country?
