That is what preying mantis do. The female kills the male after mating.

Well, out trying to get last of iris in ground. Bugs, my cat true to
it's
name, is w me chasing the bugs. There was a male mantis trying to do
it's
thing and Bugs wouldn't leave them alone, so I put them in a jar hoping
they
d finish in safety.
Mistake, the female praying mantis ate the head off the male.
Never mind, 30 minutes later, male is still doing it's thing without a
head.
Nature never fails to amaze me. I decided to take them out of jar and
put
them on a bush that Bugs couldn't reach. It was getting dark so will
see
this morning if she is still there.
I wish Bugs would stick to catching the grasshoppers.
