Last weekend's Region 4 regional convention at Blacksburg, VA, was an
excellent event, the more remarkable because it was organized by Don Rude in
an area of southwest Virginia that has no local society. Also remarkable was
a phenomenon observed at the show by myself and several other hybridizers and
growers, namely, that every single iris in the show was fragrant. None had a
fragrance that was hard to detect, and many had strong fragrance.
Yesterday, we observed the same phenomenon at the Chesapeake and Potomac
Reblooming Show in northern Virginia. Again, all of the fragrances were
easily detectable.
This contrasts, in our experience, with spring shows, which typically include
at least several cultivars that have no discernable fragrance. So, we are
wondering if fragrance goes with rebloom.
If any of you have made the same observation, or if there are still some
reblooming shows pending out there, we'd like for you to be nosy and let us
know what you sniff out. -- Griff
