I've dug seedlings that had roots 2 ft down, and pulled one out of a pot this fall that had a 3 ft long root system coiled up in the pot, so if the soil were loose all the way down.... unfortunately, most of the so-called soil (i.e., creekbed) is cemented below the depth I've broken it up with the subsoiler - ~2 ft.
But the irises I haven't watered (i.e., OVER AND OVER, IMMORTALITY) are getting moisture to send up bloomstalks from somewhere, so you may be right! ;-)
Linda, if your water table is four feet down, isn't it possible the iris roots may get deep enough to tap into it? ;-) Betty Wilkerson . . . still moving irises
