What's eating my iris?

From: Stephen Hopkins <watergarden@hargray.com>

Hello All,

You folks can probably tell me what is chewing a crescent-shaped notch out of the
base of LA leaves. I do not think it is iris borer - at least I could not find a
grub inside the base of the fan or rhizome on the plant I sacrificed to find out.
I think we are a little too far south for iris borer anyway (zone 8b). At first I
hoped it was just the caterpillar-of-the-month club and would go away of its own
accord. However, whatever it is is fairly persistent as this problem has been
occurring intermittently all summer. It only strikes iris in dry soil - not in
the bogs yet. It also seems to only strike plants which are not doing all that
well to begin with - too dry to cope with the summer heat.

Any ideas?
