Spring bloom

Dear Iris talk folk,

Bernard and I have enjoyed the last few days at our iris patch.  We have two large clumps of LOST FOR WORDS in full bloom and, to be honest, it has left me speechless (again!).

Also several clumps (of 100+ rhizomes) of LUCY PAYENS, its child NEVER SAY and its grandchild LUCY'S LEGACY all blooming at present.  Our non-yet released SORRENTO MOON (gorgeously ruffled full-moon shaped shimmering cream), ALICIA CLARE (amazingly ruffled water sprite iris in cream tonings that Graeme Grosvenor reckons is the most exquisite thing he has ever seen - and  I'm taking THAT as a great compliment), HALO DOLLY, HEIRLOOM AMETHYST and their mum MAGIC STYLE all putting on a great display.

Stacks of bloom now (200+ spikes) on SPRING WELCOME which is a sea of frothy lemon and my namesake just starting to bloom.

BUSHFIRE MOON (and stacks of kids, grandkids and great grandkids) all competing in the "most orange" stakes plus several lavendars and lilacs that are looking rather stunning from (would you believe it!) a cross of DESERT JEWEL (bright sunset tonings) x CHARLOTTE'S TUTU (deep cerise pink).

One new 1996 seedling is a deep rich plum colour with a cream rim.  Blooms are 6" across and very ruffled but this may not get another year as it is rather similar to JT's 'KINGS DREAM" (also in bloom).

By far the favourite so far has been JACARANDA LAD which is putting on a great show.  Over 15 spikes all out in bloom and all disease-free and looking gorgeous.  The colour is deep blue on first opening, and then changes to a great Jacaranda blue self.  As Bernard said, it's "drop dead gorgeous" and I have taken lots of photos and slides in readiness for my talk at the ISA Convention in a few weeks.   Our white self CRUSHED ICE is just starting to bloom and the first open bloom was 8" across and nearly 4.5 feet high this morning.  Gee I love this time of the year!

MANY more out, but will not bore you with them all tonight.

The Land of Oz has had a general election today and I have been watching the TV coverage (voting closes at 6pm EST).  As it's now after 11pm I can go to sleep safe in the knowledge that a decision will been made shortly regarding the outcome and the country will continue on quite well without me "willing" it to do so for much longer past my bedtime.

Elections seem to always bring out the worst in people and I am always happy when they are over and we can all get back onto the job at hand.  Elections are a bit like injections " we need to have them, but they are awful to think about and to endure, but once over, we know that we will be better for them."

Will be back in the iris patch tomorrow taking more photos and enjoying springtime.

Cheers from the land of Oz.  Heather Pryor
